The Blair County Literacy Council is currently in search of volunteer tutors.
Tutor training classes are scheduled for Monday, May 22 and Thursday, May 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each night at the Altoona Area Public Library.
Tutors are currently needed in all Blair County libraries.
Interested individuals should call 946-1544 or 942-1234 to reserve a space.
The Blair County Literacy Council provides tutors for adult basic education, English as a second language and institutional literacy. Tutoring is also provided for individuals who have trouble preparing for the commercial driver’s license test.
Adult basic education provides free reading instructions to adults who are 17-years-old and over, out of school, and poor readers. Reading instruction is also provided for those adults who are institutionalized.
English tutoring is available for those individuals learning English as their second language.
Adult learners are matched with a trained tutor and work in a one-on-one teaching situation. Hours are arranged between tutor and learner at their convenience. Sites are community based. This service is confidential.
Blair County Literacy Council is also looking for volunteers to help others learn English. Interested individuals may sign up for ESL tutor training. A special training session will be held Thursday, June 1 at the Altoona Area Public Library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Interested individuals should RSVP by calling 946-1544 or 942-1234.
