While the Bishop McCort track and field teams captured boy ends of the annual Bellwood-Antis Invitational on Monday night, the two local schools were well represented. Emily Ingle easily won three events and was named the Outstanding Girls Runner for her efforts. The Tyrone senior won the 800 run by two full seconds, the 1600 by five seconds and the 3200, with a school record of 11:36.6, by better than a full minute, nearly lapping the entire field.
“I think, she is one of the best distance runners in the area, if not the state,” said Tyrone track coach Tony Yaniello. “She holds school records in all three events and continues to improve on them as the season progresses. Sometimes she tries to break records when she doesn’t have to. I was pleased she took it easy in the 1600 and was able to put more effort into winning the 800 in a tough field.”
Joining Ingle with wins in both the 100 intermediate hurdles and triple jump as well as a third in the 300 low hurdles and second in the long jump was Lady Eagle teammate Liz Tepsic, who was named the Outstanding Girls Jumper. Emily Lloyd earned sixth place finishes in both hurdles and the high jump to score points for the Tyrone girls and Katie Schreckengost was sixth in the javelin.
The Lady Eagles finished third in the team race with 70 points, behind team champ Bishop McCort (89.5 points) and Northern Cambria (85 points).
“Liz set a personal best in the 300 hurdles where she defeated a girl who had beaten Liz three times this year. It just happened that a girl from Bedford won the race and Ashley Mueller from Bellwood-Antis also ran her best time to finish second. Both Emily Ingle and Liz seem to be focused on districts. They performed at the Invitational like they have all year, regardless of the competition.”
The Bellwood-Antis girls turned in a bunch of personal bests, although the tough competition was a deterrent for the Lady Blue Devils to finish any higher than eighth in the 19-team field with 37.5 points.
Ashley Mueller was second in both the 100 IM hurdles and 300 low hurdles for Bellwood-Antis. The 1600 relay team of Lauren Carter, Kelley Killinger, Lauren Leap and Chelsea Wilson was second, with their best time of the year. Wilson was third in the 400 in what was also a PR, and Leap was fourth in the high jump. Erica Greene was fifth in the 100, and Sarah Bell ran her best time to finish sixth in the 3200.
“Our goals were to get kids qualified for districts and do the best we could,” explained long-time Bellwood-Antis girls track coach Julia Roseborough, who was honored following the track meet with the 2006 Bellwood-Antis senior class dedicating the track in her honor for her service, love and devotion to the school district, kids and community. “In this type of meet, it takes outstanding athletes, like Emily Ingle and Liz Tepsic at Tyrone, plus a lot of good depth to win the championship.
“We wanted the 400 and 1600 relay teams to get a test and they did, although we goofed up in the 400 with a false start. Heather Greene in the 300 hurdles ,and Erica Greene in the 100, ran their personal bests. Kristyne Ginter qualified for districts in the javelin, and has been improving all season. Sarah Bell had her best time in the 3200 and ran a nice 1600, although she didn’t place. Overall I was very pleased with our performances.”
The B-A boys placed second behind Bishop McCort (104 points) with 92 points, edging out a very competitive Bedford team that came in third with 88 points.
Brandon Pruznak won the 400 and was second in the 200 and long jump to lead the Blue Devils. Ben Hatch won the 800 and was second in the 400 to Pruznak. Adam Mueller was third in the 100 high hurdles and fifth in the 300 IM hurdles. Ricky Shawley won the pole vault, Tony DelGrosso was second in both the shout put and discus and all three relay teams placed in the top four. The 1600 relay was second, and the 400 and 3200 teams were both fourth.
The Tyrone boys finished fifth with 47 points.
Trey Brockett won the triple jump with a personal best, was in a fourth-place in the high jump and was sixth in the long jump. Adam Shaffer won the javelin, Chris Bradigan was third in the 400, giving the local schools the top three in that event. Philip Kreckel was tied for second in the pole vault, Johnny Franco was fifth in the 200 and the 400 relay team finished third and the 3200 relay placed fifth.
“Trey Brockett just missed a school record in the triple jump, by one inch,” informed coach Yaniello, “ and Adam Shaffer beat a defending district champ in the javelin. Our guys are peaking at just the right time. Trey’s triple jump would have placed in the top eight at states last year and Adam’s throw, his best ever, would have qualified him for last year’s state tournament.”
