The Tyrone Area girls volleyball team posted their first win of the year edging the Lewistown girls in five games at the Tyrone Area Elementary gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
Tyrone started out slowly, dropping the first game to the Lady Panthers 9-25 and third game, 19-25, before rallying to win game four, 25-19 and force the match to a fifth game, which the Lady Eagles won 16-14 in a tight race to the finish. Tyrone also took game two, 25-20.
Lady eagle junior Jess Miller led the way for the Lady Eagles, who improved to 1-3, with 18 service points, including four aces. Lindsay Christine had 10 service points and eight kills for the Tyrone girls. Kim Cherry had seven service points and 15 assists, and Samantha Martinez added seven kills for first-year Tyrone coach Jessica Hetrick. Cherry and Christine are the only returning starters for the Lady Eagles.
The Tyrone Lady Eagle junior varsity defeated Lewistown 25-19 and 25-23, with Teanna Kobuck scoring 14 service points, including six aces.
Tyrone will travel to Bellefonte on Thursday for a match with the junior varsity beginning at 6 p.m.
