Mrs. Gladys A. Templeton, age 83, of RR3, Vail, Tyrone, died Sunday, December 3, 2006 at 11:45 p.m. surrounded by her loving family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born April 8, 1923 in Northwood, the daughter of Harry E. and Edna Matilda Decker Irvin. On January 19, 1946 at Christ United Methodist Church (the former Evangelical United Brethren Church) she was married by Reverend Paul Mickey to Jesse O. Templeton who preceded her in death September 29, 1978. She is survived by two sons and two daughters: Thomas J. (Christine) of State College, Gladdi Tomlinson (Richard) of Mechanicsburg, Mollie Kay (Hamid) Bakhsheshe of Mechanicsburg and Todd E. (Judith) of Tyrone; seven grandchildren: Amy Weaver of Tyrone, Krista Templeton of State College, Jessica Tomlinson of Mechanicsburg, Jesse and Jared Templeton of Tyrone, Cameron Bakhsheshe of Mechanicsburg and Aaron Bakhsheshe of Mechanicsburg and four great-grandchildren: Kristin Templeton and Alexander, Allison and Andrew Weaver. Also surviving is a brother Thomas Irvin (Leona) of Philipsburg and a devoted friend Robert Blowers and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Edward Irvin and a stepsister Anna Dillon.
Mrs. Templeton was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the choir and a member of the United Methodist women for whom she organized many of the church social functions. She was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1942. She was a cook for the Tyrone Area School District for 15 years and retired as head cook from Penn State University after 10 years service. She taught guitar lessons for many years, played guitar for the Allegheny Hilltoppers and for many years played the guitar and sang for numerous events in the surrounding area. In December 2004 she was named the WTRN “Outstanding Citizen of the Month”. Gladys had an “open door” policy at her home and loved to bake and entertain her family and friends, and loved to shop. She enjoyed attending Tyrone football games and all the events in which her children participated.
Funeral service for Mrs. Templeton will be Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Good Shepherd with Reverend Barry Neal and her son, Pastor Todd Templeton officiating. Interment will follow in Blair Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in her memory are requested to the Hospice, Home Nursing Agency, 201 Chestnut Avenue, PO Box 352, Altoona, Pa. 16603 or to the American Cancer Society, 3211 N.
