Although you would never have guessed it by the score at the end of the first quarter, the Tyrone Lady Eagles demolished Dubois in a non-league encounter at Dubois on Monday night.
Tyrone led just 3-2 after one quarter, with both teams as cold as the weather outside, but exploded for 41 points over the next two quarters, while holding Dubois to just 25.
With a big 44-27 advantage, Tyrone coach Luke Rhoades got a chance to give the junior varsity girls a lot of playing time in the fourth quarter with a 56-44 victory. With the victory the Lady Eagles improve to 7-12, with a big game on tap tonight at home against Indian Valley
“We were just horrendous with our shooting in the first quarter, again,” said Rhoades. “We picked it up a little bit in the second quarter and I challenged Liz (Tepsic) especially and the rest of the team as well as halftime.”
Tepsic and her Lady Eagle teammates took the coach’s talk to heart, opening up leads of as much as 25 points, before Dubois came back a little with the Tyrone reserves playing nearly all of the fourth quarter.
Tepsic led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, and Brooke Garbinsky also was in double figures with 10 points for the Tyrone girls.
Kirsten Wilcox led the Dubois girls, who fall to 5-10, with 11 points.
“Liz really stepped up and had a very good third quarter,” said Rhoades. We rested some of the girls, such as Rachel Emigh for the big, big game tonight against Indian Valley. That was tough last night, having to travel to Dubois and then hitting back-to-back games like the tough league game tonight against Indian Valley.”
Indian Valley defeated the Lady Eagles 63-45 at Indian Valley on Dec. 20.
Dubois won the junior varsity contest.
