Bellwood-Antis participated in the Junior High Tri-County Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Claysburg-Kimmel High School. The Little Blue Devils came home with three champs, two seconds, two thirds and two fourth-place finishes for nine place winners among their 14 entries. Bellwood-Antis has no wrestlers at 75, 80, 85 and 250.
In the team race, Bellwood-Antis tied with Northern bedford for third place with 149 points, trailing Claysburg with 179 and Portage with 176.5.
Travis Taylor (145), Nic Cover (155) and Gerald Price (210) all won their respective weight classes, while Buddy Shaw (122) and Trey Campbell (165) made the championship finals as well, but came up a bit short.
Taylor, the second seed, pinned his way into the finals with falls over Brandon Knee of Moshannon Valley, in 0:50 and Josh Yaworski of Glendale, in 4:14. In the finals at 145, Taylor (20-3) decisioned previously once-beaten and top seed Scott Nelson (14-2) of Portage, 5-2.
Cover pinned Kody Dipko of Glendale, in 1:56 and top seeded Preston Albright of Northern Bedford, in 4:26. In the finals, Cover (20-4) knocked off Tussey Mountain’s Josh Bussard 5-2.
Price, the top seed at 210, pinned Titus Feathers of Claysburg-Kimmel, in 0:43 and improved to 17-5 overall with a 10-4 win in the finals over Trevor Davis of Portage.
Shaw (17-6), the second seed, pinned Zach Detwiler of Northern Bedford, in 1:45 to reach the finals, but dropped an 18-6 major decision to once-beaten and top seed Cole Claar of Claysburg-Kimmel. Campbell was involved in pins in all three of his matches. Campbell (16-8) pinned his way into the finals, decking J. D. Lloyd of Moshannon Valley, in 2:41 and second seed Matt Stanton of Everett, in 4:05, but was pinned in the finals by top seed and once beaten Dave Kephart (11-1) of Portage, in 2:11.
Lincoln Stehley (110) and Tyler Beech (138) collected third place medals for the Little Blue Devils, while Trevor Helsley (90) and Danny Noye (105) both finished fourth.
Stehley collected his medal the hard way, falling to Josh Gibbons of Everett, by pin in 1:21 and then winning three straight in the consolation bracket. Stehley (14-11) pinned Corey Litzenberger of Northern Bedford, in 0:55 and Logan Cook of Moshannon Valley, in 1:54, before gaining a measure of revenge by majoring Gibbons 13-0 for third place. Beech (18-4) opened his tournament with a pin of Nick Neff of Claysburg-Kimmel, in 1:21, but lost by 12-4 major decision to Taylor Swires of Portage. In the consolation bracket, Beech decisioned Tussey Mountain’s Carl Kylor 5-1 and then shut out Brandon Bickford of Glendale, 4-0 in the third-place final.
Helsley (12-14) opened with a 7-1 win over Austin Harnish of Juniata Valley, before getting pinned by second seed and eventual champ Nathan Smeal of Moshannon Valley. In the consolations. Helsley majored Derek Robinson of Everett, 14-1, but lost in a return match against Harnish 7-4.
Adam Davinsizer and Eric Miller (185) each won one match before falling out of the tournament.
Adam Davinsizer (12-12) edged Devin Cox of Claysburg-Kimmel 13-10 in the first round, while Miller decisioned Zach Burkett of Claysburg-Kimmel.
