The Golden Eagles’ A.J. Schopp will wrestle for the PIAA gold medal at 103-pounds this afternoon at the Giant Center in Hershey.
The Tyrone freshman pinned Derek Leiby of Troy, in 3:38 at the quarterfinals after jumping out to a 5-0 advantage after one period.
In the semifinals Schopp and Westmont-Hilltop 103-pounder Trevor Kushner wrestled through six minutes of regulation and another 2:29 of scoreless wrestling in overtime before Schopp reversed Kushner with one second remaining to earn a 2-0 victory in the ultimate tiebreaker rideout.
The championship final will feature a rematch of last week’s Southwest Regional finals in which Schopp rallied from a 4-1 deficit to down Frank Martellotti of Shady Side Academy 11-4 for the Region title.
Championship finals will begin this afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
