With school almost out for the summer, Tyrone Borough hopes area youth will consider roller hockey in their summer vacation plans.
The borough has designed a special night to kick off the 2007 roller hockey season.
Area girls and boys are encouraged to check out the fun at the roller hockey rink located beside the community pool on Reservoir Drive, this Sunday evening, May 20, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and lasting until late dusk. The rain date will be Monday, May 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The entrance into the rink is not by the large double gates in the front, but by the small side gate, at the base of the swimming pool stairs.
Don’t stay away because you don’t know how to skate or because you don’t have skates. There are a certain number of skates available, and an instructor will teach kids how to skate.
This is a great opportunity for kids to learn, or improve upon, all the tricks and skills of playing roller hockey.
The open skate night is just the beginning of the fun at the roller hockey rink. There will also be an 8-session clinic, for beginners and advanced skaters, in mid-June, after the youth soccer season ends.
The clinic will consist of eight sessions, two each week, for four weeks. The cost for the eight sessions will be $40. In making every effort to ensure that participants will receive the very best instructions, at a reasonable fee, organizers have retained an experienced instructor, Charles (Chuck) Murray, to work with those involved in the clinic. Murray is a Tyrone High School graduate and hockey instructor.
Some of the skating skills Murray will be teaching are: forward and backward skating; crossovers; stick handling; passing; shooting; wrist and slap shots and deflections. After each instruction time, participants will all enjoy a fun scrimmage. Young people of all ages (five years through high school age) are encouraged to get involved.
Dates for the roller hockey clinic schedule include: Wednesday, June 20 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, June 23 at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, June 27 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, June 30 at 5 p.m.; Thursday, July 5 at 7 p.m. (date changed because of July 4th holiday); Saturday, July 7 at 5 p.m., Wednesday, July 11 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 14 at 5 p.m.
Interested individuals may register until the day of the first session of the clinic, Wednesday, June 20. Checks for the clinic, in the amount of $40, should be made payable to Charles Murray. Checks may be sent to Pat Stoner, 29 West 11th Street, Tyrone, PA 16686, or individuals may drop them off at the borough building.
Those interested in registering for the clinic, who have further questions, or who need to work out some fee arrangement, may call Dale Bogert at 632-6413, Rick Barrett at 684-3389 or Pat Stoner at 684-5590.
Besides the scheduled clinic times, it’s important to note that the roller rink is open to everyone, seven days a week, for rollerblading, or those interested may use regular roller skates, from 8 a.m. until dusk. There is no fee to use the rink, which is borough property. The only requirements for its use is that individuals clean up after themselves and take care of the facility.
