The Tyrone girls tennis team opened their 2007 season at home on the Clay Avenue courts on Wednesday, by hosting always tough State College.
State College won all of the matches to win a 7-0 triumph, but Tyrone gave a valiant effort in their first action of the season.
While State College has blitzed Tyrone in most of their matches over the past few years, This time around, the Tyrone girls were scoring more and doing a better job than they have against State in years.
The number five singles match was the highlight of the day, where Lady Eagle MaryElyn Hunter took Hillary Cohen to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 3-6. 6-2, 3-7.
“This was a great first match,” exclaimed Tyrone tennis coach Mike Hampton. “Last year, we weren’t able to score many points against the State College girls. This time, we were competetive in most of the matches. The girls are playing very well to begin the season, especially MaryElyn Hunter at the number five singles.
