Tyrone golfers were of to Iron Masters country club to try to finish off their unbeaten season, on a beautiful sunny and mild day, the short, tame looking Iron Masters was all but that, pins were tucked on most every hole, greens were firm and fast, and if you missed the green, the ground was hard and the ball would more than likely end up in a difficult spot.
Central was the host club and Huntingdon was also there for conference play.
“Players mistake Iron Masters as an easy golf course because of the fact, it is not a long golf course, but that is usually a mistake,” says coach Greg Ferguson. “I know a lot of good players over the years who have thought that and have been bitten by this course. There is trouble everywhere and a lot of tricky areas to place the pins and they did just that. There were only three scores in the 70\’s. It was not an easy day. I was really pleased that we were able to win this, it was special to finish unbeaten, it did not come easy.”
Central finished only two shots behind the Golden Eagles, scoring a 336 to Tyrone’s 334 total. Huntingdon was last with a score of 365.
“Our seniors will be able to say they finished their senior year unbeaten and that\’s great.”
Freshman steady-man Jimmy Ferguson led the way with a two over par 74, followed by senior Jason Tuskovich with 84, senior Ryan Ruscio was third with 86 and the fourth counting score was senior Matt Brooks with 90. Eric Loose posted 96 while junior classmate Kyle Updyke posted 97.
“I was very proud of Jimmy, he picked a good day to shine, with three early 3-putt greens, he was able to maintain his focus and bring himself back to even par before bogeying two of his final three holes. Jason also fought his way back to hang in there with a good score following some putting woes for the day, it was a good team effort. We will be losing four seniors after this season, Jason, Matt, Ryan and Mike Haupt. I will miss these guys, they will be tough to replace. Kyle and Eric will be pretty good prospects for next season, as well as Cody Savino, Derrick Reese, Jordan Taylor and Andrew Brokenshire who will be juniors. Freshman returning who will be factors are Jimmy Ferguson, James Russell, Ronnie Garbinski and Ricky Day. The sleeper coming into our line up, who I expect really good things from will Be Olivia Stever. She will be one of our best for next year in her freshman year.
“I would like to take this opportunity to say that our guys became a close group, and the kids represented the town of Tyrone well, their coach well, themselves and their families well and their Golden Eagle school well. I\’m very proud to be a part of this chapter of their lives, I thank my golfers and I thank their parents, they are a great group of kids. Now we go win the Mac championship next Thursday for the Grand finale!!”
