The Tyrone Junior High football team had to travel a long way on Thursday for their game at Spring Mills against Penns Valley. The Little Golden Eagles came back happy after collecting their first win of the 2007 season 20-8.
Tyrone gave up the first points on the evening when Penns Valley quarterback Ryan Baker plunged one yard for a touchdown and then passed for a successful two-point conversion.
The Eagles then controlled the rest of the ballgame.
Still in the first quarter, Tyrone crept closer to Penns Valley with Jeremy Miller capping the scoring drive with a one-yard TD. Although the two-point try failed to leave the Eagles still down 8-6, it was to be only a matter of time.
With the score still 8-6 at the half, Tyrone kicked off to Penns Valley to begin the second half, but stopped the Little Rams, and went down the field to score. Zach Burke scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 14-yard scamper and Steve Franco passed to Korry Cowher for the two-point PAT. Tyrone moved into a 14-8 lead they would never surrender.
“After that first touchdown, Penns Valley was done,” said Tyrone junior high coach Dan Plummer. “We were finally able to kick it into gear. We have been having success moving the ball all year, but have had trouble scoring points. Today, we finally got into the end zone.” The Tyrone junior high has lost to Roosevelt 22-0, Bellwood-Antis 30-6, and Huntingdon 30-8 in their three previous contests.
In the fourth quarter, Tyrone added an insurance score with Miller dashing 36 yards for his second TD of the game.
Burke had a big game, running for 176 yards on 21 carries and Miller added six totes for 45 yards.
The Little Eagle defense forced a fumble and recorded five sacks to control the game over the final three and a half quarters and make it easy for the Tyrone offense.
“The team played well, they finally put together four good quarters,” said Plummer. “After the initial stance, our defense really tightened up and played well. I was pleased with our overall performance. We still have some work to do. The team needs to get better as we go through the season.”
Tyrone (1-3) will host the Bald Eagle Junior High next Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
