Mrs. Betty G. Davis, age 87, of State College and a former Tyrone resident and a guest at The Terrace at Brookline, died Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 10:55 p.m. at Mount Nittany Medical Center. She was born February 19, 1920 at Philipsburg, the daughter of Reuben and Alverta DeVinney Griffith. On June 23, 1941 she was married to John McClellan Davis who preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, John M. Davis III (Barbara) of Carlisle, three daughters – Becky Schaul of Bald Eagle, Tyrone RD 3, Betsy Fitzpatrick (Greg) of Lancaster and Susie Schnellbaugh (Max) of Boalsburg; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
She was a graduate of Philipsburg High School, Class of 1937 and received a B.A. degree from Gettysburg College in 1941. She was a member and chapter president of the Penn State Alumnae of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, and of the Esther Circle and served on a number of other church committees. She was a volunteer at the Penn State University Sports Museum and Visitors Center. When in Tyrone she was active in the American Red Cross, the Tyrone Service League, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She was an avid fan of Rene Portland’s Lady Lion Basketball program. Mrs. Davis retired in March of 1985 from Pattee Library as Supervisor of Lending Services after 19 years service.
The family will welcome visitors at a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20 at Grace Lutheran Church where a Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. with Reverend P. Stevens Lynn officiating. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
