Thirty-seven boys and girls from Altoona, Bellwood, Tipton and Tyrone areas, ages 7 to 13, participated in this year’s 2008 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, seven of which have earned the right to compete at the regional level. Bellwood Council 8075 sponsored the local competition at the Northern Blair County Recreation Center on January 26, 2008. All girls and boys up to the age of 14 were eligible to participate.
New for this year was the exhibition group for all youth under the age of 10. Fourteen girls and boys competed in either the 9 year old group or the 8 and under group. Winning for the girls, ages 8 & 9 were, Mary Grabowski and Karson Swogger respectively. For the boys, Jacob Meredith and Nathan Davis were first place winners.
In the competition group, winners of which can compete at the higher levels are: Anna Wolfe is the 10-year-old girls’ champion and Jake Burch is the winner of the 10-year-old boys’ division. In the 11-year-olds’ bracket, Emily Nagle is the girls’ champion and Brendon Gripp is the boys’ champion. Twelve-year-old winners in the girls’ and boys’ divisions were Mikayla Fisher and Jordan Miller. The 13-year-old girls’ division was won by Olivia Stever with no boys competing for this age group. Unfortunately, no youth competed in the fourteen-year-old age group. Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contests.
Each of competition group winners can move on to compete at the regional level competition to be held on March 1st at Fairfield High School with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels.
