Rachel Emigh wins four individual events
Arguably one of the strongest boys track and field teams in recent years looked the part as the Golden Eagle boys team came out of the blocks impressively showing off their depth and skill defeating Juniata Valley here Tuesday afternoon. “Returning letterman with experience and some outstanding newcomers really helped set the tone on the track and in the field,” coach Yaniello said. “We always expect a good tough meet against Juniata Valley. For a small school they have outstanding coaches and their athletes compete at the highest level.”
The Golden Eagles out-pointed Juniata Valley 92.5 to 57.5, while the Lady Eagles were defeated by the Juniata Valley girls 98–51.
Tyrone boys won 12 of the 18 events and scored huge numbers on the track outscoring the Hornet runners 55.5 to 31.5. Ben Ingle (1600, 800, 1600 and 3200 relay) ran a sub five minute mile and won four first places. Nathan Kruis (400, 1600 Relay, 3200 Relay) won three events. Brandon Gehret (300 H, 400 Relay), Ross Black (110 Hurdles, 1600 Relay), Dustin Elder (3200, 3200 Relay) won two events.
“Our jumpers will come along,” Coach Yaniello said. “It was very cold and windy but we were able to get a 6-1 high jump from junior Kyle Updike. Kyle made 6-1 on his first jump and I shut him down from there. Ethan Etters performed well in the long and triple with decent jumps for this early. Our pole vaulters will come along after jumping into a strong head wind today. We are excited about our field having two first year shot putters throw over 41 feet, with Jerrod Good winning the event on his last throw.”
In the girls meet the Lady Eagles won six of the 18 events with last year’s state qualifier, Rachel Emigh winning four individual events. Sarah Halter won the 1600, and Lizzie Shield won the 400.
“Rachel Emigh jumped as well as expected in the pole vault despite the conditions opting to stop after clearing 8-6”, Coach Yaniello said. “Rachel had an outstanding long jump easily qualifying for districts with a leap of 15 feet-six and a half inches. Rachel is stronger and faster than last season.”
Sarah Cox had a good day grabbing two second places and third in the throws.
“Numbers again will hurt the girls dual meet season,” Yaniello said. “We had 30 girls get physicals and we are down to 17. The girls we have are working hard and will continue to do well this season.”
Next up for the Tyrone thinclads is a Co-Ed meet of relays Thursday, at Hollidaysburg.
