The Tyrone girls softball team had a tough way to begin the 2008 softball season. After having a scheduled Monday game against Backyard Brawl rival Bellwood-Antis, postponed because of a wet and muddy home field, the Lady Eagles officially opened the season at Wingate on Tuesday against Bald Eagle Area, who has been in the last two District championship finals, winning in 2006 and falling to Philipsburg-Osceola last year.
The BEA girls took no prisoners, with Elizabeth Hartnett retiring all nine batters to pitch a perfect game, while her teammates pounded out 15 hits and shut out Tyrone 15-0 in three innings.
“We had first game jitters and were tight early on,” explained Tyrone veteran head softball coach Lois Loncher. “Ariane Miller pitched better than the stats indicate and Lindsay Christine did a good job catching and keeping the ball in front of her. We are young at a lot of positions but need to react not think.”
The Lady Eagles next game will be on Thursday against another tough Centre County squad, playing Penns Valley at Tyrone.
