The Tyrone Junior High Ninth Grade football team continued their winning ways on Thursday at Gray-Vets Memorial Field by bashing St. Marys Junior High squad 22-6.
In improving to 7-0, the Little Eagles ran their scoreless streak to 11 quarters. In a 20-12 setback, Central Mountain scored in the fourth quarter, on Sept. 18, the last team to dent the Golden Eagle Junior High’s goal line. Since then, no one had scored against the Eagles until a fumble with less than a minute to play, Thursday.
On Thursday, Tyrone built up a 22-0 lead with single scores in the first, second and fourth quarters, before St. Marys, with the Tyrone backups in the game and driving for a score, lost a fumble. St. Marys picked up the fumble at their own five and ran the mistake back 95 yards for their only score of the game.
Caleb Snyder, who carried seven times for 65 yards, scooted for a 10-yard touchdown in the opening quarter, to give the Eagles a lead they would hold for the remainder of the ballgame.
In the second stanza, Christian Getz added a 10-yard score. Getz led Tyrone runners with 108 yards on 13 carries.
Snyder added two-point conversion runs after both first-half touchdowns to give the Tyrone ninth graders a 16-0 advantage at the halftime intermission.
The Little Eagles defense had five tackles for losses behind the line of scrimmage and recovered three St. Marys fumbles-one by Caleb Snyder and two by Shaquille Williams.
“St. Marys came to play tonight,” said Tyrone junior high coach Dan Plummer. “Our defense bent a little, but never broke, Their only touchdown was the fumble recovery against our offense. The defensive line played great and the offensive line continues to be the key to our success.”
After a scoreless third quarter, both teams put up one six-pointer in the fourth quarter. First, John Romano scored on a five-yard run for the Golden Eagles and the point-after run was stopped. Then after the Tyrone backups had driven inside the St. Marys 10-yard line, The Flying Dutchmen recovered a fumble at the five and ran the fumble back all the way for their only score.
John Romano rushed nine times for 52 yards and Nick Romano added 39 yards on four carries, just short of a 10-yards per carry average.
Tyrone quarterback Kaleb Chronister ran three times for seven yards and completed two of six passes for 14 yards. Marcus Wagner grabbed one pass for nine yards and Snyder had the only reception for five yards.
“I was real pleased with our performance,” said coach Plummer. “We continue to do very well on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The kids are focused. They are working their butts off in practice and during games they are executing.”
Tyrone (7-0) will travel to Philipsburg on Thursday, Oct. 16, to play Philipsburg-Osceola.
