After dropping two games in a row, Martin Oil took advantage of three errors and five walks, combined with three hits of their own to bomb Dick’s Pharmacy for nine first-inning runs and then cruised behind a well-pitched performance by Trey Mock in a 12-2 five inning contest.
Martin Oil had only five hits, but four of them were doubles.
Mock scattered three hits, striking out four and walking five in four innings, to pick up the victory. Mock struck out Shane Gillman in the first with runners on first and second to end the inning and then his teammates sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first at Stadium Drive field in Bellwood. Nate Gray and Mock opened the frame with walks from Andy Lytle. Chad Coho dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt and Lytle threw it away to allow Gray to score. Mike Albright ripped a double to score Jesse Davis, courtesy running for Mock. Nate Plummer walked. Alex Miller singled to drive home Coho, and Justin Miller was safe on an error. Adam Kovac knocked in a run with a sac fly, Alex Miller and Justin Miller score on two different errors and Coho doubled to the fence in right center to score Jared Coho, who had walked and Mock, who reached base on the error that scored J. Miller.
In the top of the third, Dick’s loaded the bases with no outs. Mock got out of trouble with a lot of help from Chad Coho at third base. First Coho grabbed a line shot in the air and raced to tag third base for an unassisted double play. Then Chad got the third out of the inning by gloving a foul pop for the third out of the inning, without a run being scored.
Justin Miller pitched the fifth for Martin Oil, getting himself in trouble on a single and two walks that loaded the bases with two outs. Miller fanned the final batter of the game on a called third strike to end the game.
In the third, Chad Coho walked and went to second on a throwing error, when Dick’s relief pitcher Craig Eckenrode tried to pick him off first base. Coho scored on an error on a ball hit by Plummer. Alex Miller doubled courtesy runner Dyllon Gorby to third base. Kovac’s second sacrifice fly of the game scored Gorby and sent Miller to third. Justin Miller and Alex Miller then worked a double steal with J. Miller taking second, while Alex Miller stole home.
“We still didn’t hit like we should be doing,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “Alex Miller had a nice day at the plate with two hits. We were able to take advantage of the walks and errors to score runs, but I’m not anywhere close to being happy about our hitting. Our pitch selection is bad, we need to get better quick.
“Trey Mock pitched a great game, not allowing any earned runs and coming back to keep runs from scoring a couple of times, when he pitched himself out of trouble.”
