The world’s greatest love story takes to the stage of the Tyrone Area High School in the landmark Broadway musical “West Side Story” as presented April 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. TAHS seniors, Jonathan Harris and Sofia Revolorio will portray the star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria with Stevie Woodring and Derik Cruz, as Anita and Bernardo, their Puerto Rican rivals. Riff, the leader of the Jets, is Tyler Ayres. More than 44 students will bring this musical masterpiece to life on the TAHS stage each night along with the portrayal of the adults by teachers David Rutter, as the sarcastic Lt. Shrank, Cummins McNitt as Doc and TASD security officer “Bub” Dick as Officer Krupke. Catherine Young, musical director, will be conducting the 22-piece orchestra with Karen Volpe, Mishler Theatre Manager, handling the drama direction. Set design and construction is being created by Eric Feather and the TAHS arts studio students with the aid of Don Dietz of Huntingdon. Stage Manager is math teacher Stephanie Haid.
