Looking up Tyrone athletes Mark Mingle (left) and Ben Ingle (right) helped the Golden Eagles to victories over Central and Lewistown at Tyrone, on Tuesday. Mingle won the shot put with a throw of 45-0, while Ingle, shown finishing the 800 after a finishing kick carried him to victory, won the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs. Ingle and Glace win multiple events, Franco returns
Tyrone girls and boys teams competed against old rival and now new rival Central at home yesterday afternoon. Many of the same coaches from years ago remain on both teams. Coaches agreed that the rival has been missed over the past few years. “Central vs Tyrone meets were always exciting and highly competitive in the past and yesterday’s meet again brought out the best of both teams,” Coach Yaniello said. Eagles coaches were happy with performances with many athletes setting personal bests. Tyrone boys defeated Central 91-59 and beat Lewistown 106-44.
In the boys meet with Central, the Golden Eagles won 14 of 18 events outscoring Central 48 to 39 on the track and 43 to 20 in the Field. Ben Ingle won the 800 (2:05), 1600 (4:36), and 3200 (10:44). Larry Glace placed first in the 200 (24.6), Long Jump (19-0 1/2) and Triple Jump (38-11 1/2). Johnny Franco won the 100 (11.44), Ross Black the 110 Hurdles (17.6), Brandon Gehret the 300 Hurdles (44.8), Robbie Hopkins the Pole Vault (11-0), Kyle Updike the High Jump (6-1), Mark Mingle Shot Put (45-0), and Nate Dane Discus (110-11). Tyrone’s 400 Relay Team ran a very fast time (45.6) with the team of Larry Glace, Shane Tate, Shane Emigh, and Brandon Gehret for a first place.
“It was exciting to have Johnny Franco back for the first time this year and he ran a nice time.” Yaniello said. “Our 400 relay team, without Franco running, ran as fast as we ran all last year on that state qualifying team, today. We are working Johnny in slowly and he ran only one race today.
“Ben Ingle continues to amaze me,” Coach Yaniello said. “He reminds me of former standout runner, Harold Beringer. Hank would run the two mile relay, mile, 880, and 2 mile all in one meet and have good times. Ben is running the same events and his time are even more amazing.”
In the boys meet against Lewistown the Golden Eagles had much of the same success scoring over 100 points. Most of the results were the same although Adam Bonsell was able to win the Javelin (123-0) against the Panthers.
A strong Central girls team defeated both Tyrone and Lewistown.
Lady Eagle Ashley Salyer was strong again, winning the 800 (2:44) against Lewistown. Ashley Ford picked up second places in the long and triple jumps, and 1600. Lizzie Shields won the 100 (13.5) against the Panthers. Tyrone girls were again without standout Rachel Emigh due to illness.
“Rachel is capable of winning four events ever meet and her talent is truly missed,” Coach Yaniello said. “We hope she gets better soon.”
Tyrone returns to the track on Tuesday, April 22, for an away meet at Central Mountain, against Central Mountain and Bellefonte at 4 p.m.
