Katharine Metz Weko, age 86, of 7005 Hungry Hollow Road, Alexandria, PA, died Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 5:03 p.m. at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Her death was both sudden and unexpected.
She was born November 3, 1922 at Water Street, the daughter of the late Henry Raymond and Effie (Hess) Metz. She was married to Charles W. Weko, Sr. on January 6, 1943 at the Lutheran Parsonage by the Reverend Charles Strong. He survives at their Water Street residence.
Others surviving are two sons, Charles W. Weko, Jr. and his wife Linda of Alexandria, and Metz Weko and his wife Melinda of Water Street; one daughter, Janet Zerbe of Centre Hall; and grandchildren, Mary Ann Shultz and her husband Carlos of Berwyn, Betty Jo Getz and her husband John of Spring Mills, Michelle Lee McCollum and her husband Brad of Las Vegas, NV, Charles W. Weko III and his wife Stephanie of Monterey, CA, Matthew E. Weko and his wife Amanda of Collingswood, NJ, Katharine L. Weko of Westminster, MD, Ruthanne Smith and her husband Chris of Fort Hood, TX, and Sarah Metz Weko of Water Street.
Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.
Mrs. Weko was predominately a homemaker. Since her birth she was a member of the cradle roll at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church at Water Street, her family church, and she continued her active membership when the Lutheran church closed and became the Water Street Evangelical Church. Katharine enjoyed and was extremely proficient at crafts, quilting, hand work, braiding rugs, needle work, and sewing. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch visiting with the village people and friends, and foremost her grandchildren and her family.
She graduated with the Class of 1941 from Alexandria High School. She was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County and had resided at her current residence since 1946.
Family and friends will be received at the Cutright Funeral Homes – Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main Street, Alexandria, PA 16611 on Sunday, November 16, 2008 from 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at Water Street Evangelical Church, Route 22, Route 453 Intersection, Alexandria, PA 16611 on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bruce Boyles officiating.
A private interment will be in the Shaffersville Lutheran Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to the Water Street Evangelical Church, PO Box 114, Alexandria, PA 16611.
