Seniors citizens — some in pairs holding hands, some with grandchildren (again holding hands) and some singles — visited the Huntigndon County Fair Wednesday to take advantage of free admission — despite the heat. The antique tractor parade and the Farm Museum proved once again to be crowd pleasers, especially among the older crowd. Entertainment under the Midway Stage tent was also geared toward the older audience. It was a respite from the hot sun.
The Mount Union Twirlers will perform under the Midway Stage tent at 4:30 p.m. Friday, followed by Seve Engle, ventriloquist. At 7 p.m., Community Band members will entertain with their summer selections from the three concerts in the park.
The fair is heading into the last days with three grandstand shows left. Beginning at 5 p.m., four contestants in the fair queen pageant will be introduced by Dan and Galla on the grandstand stage. They are vying for the title of the Huntingdon County Fair Queen, a $250 scholarship and an opportunity to compete in the state fair queen contest.
The contestants are Charann Foster, 17, of Petersburg, R.R. 1; Terri Grissinger, 19, of HCR 71, Orbisonia; Jessica Rowe, 17, Mapleton, R.R. 1; and Elisha Estep, 19, of HCR 61, Mill Creek.
A large part of Friday will be consumed by the Youth Livestock Sale for many volunteers and buyers. Market hogs, lambs, goats, rabbits and dairy beef and beef cattle are sold to the highest bidder so youth can recoup some of the money they have put into the care and feeding of their animals. The results of the sale will be published in Saturday’s edition of The Daily News.
The Sleeper Chassis Demolition Derby concludes Friday night in the grandstand, beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children.
Friday is also Children’s Day at the fair. Special prices will be available for rides. From 2-5 p.m., the Wrist Band Special of $6 gives unlimited rides; individual tickets are sold at $.75 and a bonus sheet will be available from 5-10 p.m. On Saturday, from 1-6 p.m., the Wrist Band Special gives unlimited rides. The bonus sheet applies from 6-10 p.m.
At noon, the popular Mini Garden Tractor Pull will be held, free of charge, in the grandstand.
Saturday night’s grandstand entertainment is also free. Fox Brothers of Nashville, Tenn., voted as Entertainer of the Year by the Christian Country Music Association in 2001, will be the Saturday night featured grandstand entertainment at the fair this year.
Fox Brothers was chosen by the county fair board as entertainment to honor the public’s requests for a Christian entertainment group. Fox Brothers has a long list of awards behind its name, including CCMA Vocal Group of the Year in 2001 and two other years. The group also has a long list of hit singles.
