As camp gets ready to break up, I feel we had a much better camp than last year, and hopefully we will have a better season. We played together, worked hard together and have come together as a team.
I believe that I have improved from last year. Part of that is through maturity and part of that is with experience. I know the playbook better, I had another year of working out in the weight room to get stronger and another year to work with the coaching staff so I can be ready if needed.
Being the backup quarterback is a tough job. I have to prepare like I am going to play. I need to execute and perform every chance I have. You never hope for an injury to a teammate, but I have to be ready to go in cold in case it is necessary. It is tough practicing when you know you are on the second team, but the work I do will payoff if I am called upon.
I have to be 100% focused in practice because Brandon Maceno and I both work on the scout team offense. We have to play hard to challenge our starters so we put them in the most game like conditions in practice. If we don’t work hard, they won’t be as ready as they could be. Coach Franco always credits the scout team for a lot of our success. We’re working hard to make sure we are ready.
Coach Franco’s buddy system has really helped the closeness of this team. We were already starting to get close because of dealing with Randy’s death, but with the buddy system, we got to know the sophomores on a personal level. We are friends and teammates.
Friday night is where everyone circles on their calendars. We look forward to the game, Bellwood looks forward to the game. Both communities get so excited about the game. The atmosphere Friday night will be even bigger than the Forest Hills playoff game last year. This game is a playoff game for both teams and both teams prepare like it is.
