The Golden Tigers of Hollidaysburg came to play Monday afternoon when they hosted Tyrone, dominating the football game en route to a 36-7 victory.
They were aided, however, by Tyrone’s worst outing of the season. When asked about his team’s performance, Tyrone coach Chuck Banas said, “Nothing good happened in this game. Period.”
Banas’ Golden Eagles did score first when quarterback Bill Schreckengost scored from one yard out in the first quarter. Unfortunately for Tyrone, Hollidaysburg owned the rest of the game. The momentum swung in the Tigers favor when they returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and from there they never looked back.
After Hollidaysburg scored in the second quarter, Tyrone was only down nine points to open the half and received the kickoff to start off. However, the Golden Tigers returned an interception for a touchdown on Tyrone’s first second half possession. The two point conversion put them ahead 24-7.
From that point the seams had begun to unravel for the Golden Eagles.
Although Schreckengost bounced back from his interception and completed two 20 yard passes and picked up some good yards on keepers, the Eagle offense stalled. Hollidaysburg kept the ball on the ground, driving 72 yards for their second offensive score of the afternoon.
Tyrone did have a shot to stop the Tiger drive, however. After running back Ryan Smith lost three yards, followed by an illegal substitution penalty, Hollidaysburg faced a third and long from the Tyrone 25. However, the Tigers caught the opposing defense off-guard with a lead play up the middle for 24 yards to set up the score.
“That wasn’t a Tyrone football team on the field tonight” commented Banas.
Chuck Banas was probably referring to his team’s performance late in the game, where Tyrone football teams usually play exceptionally hard and well. However, after Bill Schreckengost chased down the defender who intercepted his pass on Tyrone’s final offensive series, it looked like Tyrone quit playing. After their last score, the Tigers recovered their own kickoff on Tyrone’s 35 when the Golden Eagles were unable to gather in the ball.
Hollidaysburg showed class, taking consecutive knees to run off the last two minutes of play.
The Golden Eagles drop to an even 2-2 on the year and will be looking for a much better performance when they travel to Bellefonte for a match-up with the Red Raiders next Monday.
