The Tyrone junior high football team traveled to Huntingdon on Thursday to battle the Huntingdon Bearcat junior high.
Dustin Brown broke a 6-6 tie with 69-yard scamper from scrimmage in the second quarter for Tyrone. Leonard Wilson rushed for the two-point conversion to go ahead 14-6 and the two defenses refused to allow another [point after that for the next two quarters plus.
In improving their overall mark to 4-1 and their Big 8 record to an unbeaten 4-0, the Little Golden Eagles set up what will probably be the fight for the conference title when defending Big 8 champ Tyrone travels to Lewistown next Thursday to take on the undefeated Lewistown junior high.
Derrick Calderson gave the Huntingdon junior high the early lead with a 45-yard run for the first score of Thursday’s contest.
Leonard Wilson dashed 20 yards to tie the score still in the first quarter. Both PAT attempts-a rush by Huntingdon and kick by Tyrone failed, leaving a 6-6 deadlock for Brown’s long run to break.
Dustin Brown led Tyrone with 107 yards on 10 carries, Leonard Wilson added 55 yards on 10 carries, Nate Woodring had 25 on six carries and Heath Walk added 16 on four totes. Wilson completed three of six passes for 64 yards, with Trey Brockett grabbing two for 49 yards and Doug Morrow one reception for 15 yards.
The Tyrone defense, in addition to limiting Huntingdon to one score, got interceptions from Leonard Wilson and Doug Brown and a sack by Johnny Miller.
“This was a very big win,” explained Tyrone coach Dan Plummer. “Huntingdon was just coming off a tough 28-26 loss to Lewistown and was out to redeem themselves and get back into the Big 8 title hunt. We were able to push them off and stay in the hunt ourselves to repeat.
The game at Lewistown next Thursday could settle the conference picture. I am extremely proud of our young men who had to play in co0nditions that were far from ideal in the cold and the rain. They had a goal and they went out and achieved it.”
