It’s the “Showdown in Sidman” tonight as the Golden Eagles get ready to cruise deeper into the playoffs with a win over highly ranked Forest Hills. It’s been great to continue to hear the positive chatter in Tyrone about this team as they continue to head towards another state title. I’ve heard a lot of people comparing this team to the 1999 state champions and how the 2002 squad has continued to hit its stride. Good luck tonight to Coach Franco and the Eagles!
Did I read in The Daily Herald that someone on Tyrone Borough Council said “don’t believe all that you read in the newspaper?” Were they speaking about a news story concerning a Borough meeting? Or our right to freedom of speech in writing a column based on our opinions, similar to this one? Let me just say to all of our readers that our stories are accurate, and our recent poll on approval ratings was exact and very fair in how it was done, with random registered voters pulled out of the phone book. I’ll say it again, please wake up local officials and look in the mirror before criticizing this newspaper when it comes to how the government in Tyrone Borough handles itself with the media and at public meetings.
Wasn’t election night interesting? As a life-long Democrat, I found myself splitting my ballot for the first time in ten elections. Across the state, unqualified or just unorganized candidates didn’t run a campaign effectively. The first order of business in a campaign is your message, but its futile if your not going to deliver that message to the public by way of advertising, appearances, door to door and other means to spread that message. All of the Democratic candidates who lost locally didn’t run effective campaigns and lost to the degree of embarrassment. I pray for the party that I’ve been proud to be a part of since age eighteen, will find a clue in this state and first pick the right candidates for these local and statewide races and get behind them with lots of money and organization.
Congratulations to Epworth Manor on their grand opening yesterday of the new expansion project. It’s another Tyrone positive with the addition of ten new apartments, twenty-eight personal care suites and a new state of the art memory support neighborhood.
Other new business projects in the works around town include a new dress shop located next to The Daily Herald on Pennsylvania Avenue, which may open around March next year, the continued work on the new library and a new grocery store opening in the back of The Daily Herald owned by Lou Zimmerman. Congratulations to all of these new businesses as well.
On Monday in The Daily Herald , look for a special sixteen page salute to our veterans called “Let Freedom Ring” featuring patriotic songs, writings and even “The Gettysburg Address” as we look back at the wars and sacrifices made by all of people that served this great nation.
I couldn’t believe that the big story this week was the shoplifting verdict of actress Wynona Rider. The record breaking, nation changing election just the day before was moved aside after only one day of coverage by this ridiculous obsession that the news networks have with celebrities. Who cares why she stole the clothes? Who cares what movies she’s been in? Who cares about O.J. Simpson? Who started this all anyway?
We have nice weather this weekend to enjoy the last days of fall. Enjoy the temperatures and leaf raking duties. And, of course, a weekend wouldn’t be the same without football. Go Eagles, Lions, and Steelers!
