Indian Valley started out with falls at 160 and 171 at Burnham on Thursday night and then traded wins with visiting Tyrone for a 39-29 win over the Eagles.
At 189, Chris Tremmel broke through to put the Eagles on the scoreboard by outlasting Andrew Noeir 13-11. After a 2-2 first period, Tremmel used six nearfall points and a reversal in the middle stanza then withstood a late reversal and nearfall by Noeir in the final minute of the third period for the win.
Indian Valley stretched the lead to 15-3 with a Nate Burkey 8-2 win over Justin Clark at 215.
“What really hurt us tonight,” said Tyrone coach Blair Packer, “is those bonus points that put us in a hole so far.”
At heavyweight, Eagle sophomore Terry Tate made quick work of Levi Harmon, who outweighed Terry by 28 pounds, for a fall in just 0:21.
The Warriors won the next two weights with Andrew Winters pinning Robert Waite at 103, and Brandon Rauch using eight final-period points to major Richard Klapper 14-2 at 112.
With their backs to the wall, Tyrone, down 25-9, came back strong with three wins in a row.
At 119, Dane McCloskey cut the Indian Valley lead by six with a fall over Chad Batista in 1:15. Thad Westley outscored Warrior Garrett Dixon 15-2 over the final two periods for a 17-4 major decision at 125. Westley used a takedown, two reversals and three different sets of nearfall points.
When Brett Harris worked Blake Selfridge for a 13-4 major decision and Indian Valley was docked a team point as well at 130, suddenly Indian Valley’s lead had been shaved to a single point, 24-23.
The Warriors responded with three wins of their own to wrap up the team win however.
In an effort to keep the team score close, Tyrone coach Blair Packer forfeited to Indian Valley’s Matt Shank at 135 and moved sophomore David Miller up a weight class to 140.
Miller fell behind 7-2 midway through the third period before staging a comeback with an escape and takedown to close to 7-5, but ran out of time.
“Davey went after his kid and gave it a good six minutes,” said Packer. “That’s all I can ask of him. With a disadvantage in weight, he had a daunting task in front of him. I was pleased with what I saw, despite the loss.”
Adam Swayne was pinned by Jake Savitts to give Indian Valley an unsurpassable 39-23 lead, despite a closing pin by Brice Mertiff over the Warrior’s Chad Lindsey.
“We have to go back and really work on this,” said coach Packer. “This is an eye-opener for me. Indian Valley deserved to win tonight. They went after it. We had a couple places where possibly we could have scored more points. Just little things here and there cost us some points.”
Junior High
Tyrone jumped out to a 16-0 lead after three weight classes in the junior high meet wrestled prior to the varsity action and closed by winning seven of the final eight to post a 63-30 victory for their second straight dual meet win.
With the dual beginning at the 185-pound weight class, Heath Walk won by major decision, Jeff Miller notched a fall and Brad Oswalt received a win by forfeit to open up a 16-0 lead.
Indian Valley turned the meet around to win five of the following seven weights to pull to within 22-21 after the 95-pound bout and 26-24 after 105. Only Anthony Romano with a pin at 80 and T. J. Albright with a major decision at 100 were able to break up the Warriors run through the lightweights.
Tyrone recovered their lost momentum for head junior high coach Jason Bainey however with consecutive victories by Jacob Smerekar (110), Josh Hunter (115), Sam McCloskey (122), James Updike (130) and Donnie Conrad (138) and after an Indian Valley win, got pins by Tyler Updike (155) and John Miller (165) to settle the final score.
“Our kids were ready to go,” explained coach Bainey. “They were very aggressive, that’s what we have been emphasizing-be aggressive and stay on the attack and they will come out with a victory.”
