(Houtzdale) In the 1st Annual Mo Valley YMCA Holiday Tourney, Tyrone Junior High Boys raised their record to 5 – 2 with wins over Philipsburg and State College to bring home the Traveling Trophy.
Their semifinal game was against a familiar foe they had played only nine days earlier, P – O. This time, the Baby Golden Eagles took a 28 – 23 lead into halftime. A strong second half effort then allowed them to coast to a 61-41 victory.
Against State College in the Championship Game, Tyrone took a 21-19 lead into halftime in a back-and-forth first half. Neither team could muster more than a three-point lead until Tyrone built a 38 – 32 lead with 1:34 left on the clock. The Golden Eagles had to withstand a furious charge from State College, and their own poor shooting from the foul line, to escape with the title.
In the semifinal contest,, Adam Shaffer led nine players in the scoring column with 21 points and Josh Clark added 12, while Doug Morrow and Adam Corle tossed down 7 apiece.
In the finals, Adam Corlefronted the Tyrone junior high courtmen with 18 points, while Doug Morrow added nine. Josh Clark and Adam Shaffer chipped in seven and six respectively.
“We played extremely well against some tough competition this weekend,” quoted Coach Jim Domenick. “The kids really pulled together as a team. One area we will need to continue to work on, though, is our foul shooting (16 for 32). They’re easy points, and we’re not taking advantage.”
