Bellwood-Antis had one of the Blue Devils best showings at the Tyrone-Pepsi Invitational on Jan. 6, 1982.
B-A placed third in a field of seven with 104 team points, edging Blairsville by two and 1/2 points for the third spot.
Bellwood-Antis had two champions in Tracey Karlie (112) and Dan Himes (132). Rob Watters (138) and Bill Damiano (hwt.) also earned a trip to the finals, but had to settle for second when their title bids were blocked. Don Huff (155) placed third and Mike Cherry (98) and Bill Capouillez (126) finished fourth.
Tracey Karlie, he second seed, drew a bye in the quarterfinals then pinned Scott Cowfer of Tyrone, in 3:43 in the semifinals and decked Blairsville’s Ken Stipcak, the top seed, in the finals at 112 in 1:02.
Dan Himes opened the tournament with a 7-2 decision over Randy Gonder of Ligonier Valley, and edged Curt Keznor of North Star, in the semis. In the finals at 132, Himes, the third seed pinned top seed, Mike Fetchko of Blairsville, in 4:19.
Rob Watters, the top seed at 138, had a bye in the first round, then majored Rod Newell of Ligonier Valley, 16-6 and was edged by No. Two seed Bob Gaston of Blairsville, 2-1 in the finals.
Bill Damiano, top seeded at heavyweight, pinned Jeff loose of Tyrone in the semis, after an opening round bye, but lost a 6-1 decision to No. Two seed Greg Citeroni of Blairsville, in the finals.
Don Huff won by an 11-3 major decision over Brian Newhoff of North Star, in the quarterfinals, before dropping into the consolation bracket with a loss to Nelson Martinez of Northern Bedford. In the consolation semifinal at 155, Huff pinned Dave Graff of Blairsville, in 2:48, then squeaked by Alex Matson of Ligonier Valley, 1-0 to claim third place.
Mike Cherry was pinned by Jeff Keznor of North Star, in 5:31, in the semis after a first-round bye. In the consi final at 98, Cherry was shut out by Dave Fink of the Tyrone B team 4-0.
Bill Capouillez lost to Brian Deist of North Star in the quarterfinals, then came back to earn a berth in the consifinal at 126. Capouillez pinned Ron Reed of the Tyrone B squad, and won by injury default over Frank Majhan of Ligonier Valley, to reach the third place consi. In the consifinal, Capouillez was pinned by Darren Troutman of Northern Bedford, in 3:46.
Bellwood-Antis also had J. R. Baum finish 0-2 at 105, Ron Mock went 1-2 at 119, with a 9-7 decision over Tom ferry of Northern Bedford, Drew Huff went 1-2 at 167 with a fall over Jim Horrell of Ligonier Valley, in 1:30 and Nick Padula finished 1-2 at 167, with a 9-5 win over Tim Caldwell of Ligonier Valley. The Blue Devils had no enter at 185.
Tyrone won their own tournament with 182.5 points followed by North Star with 135.5, B-A with 104, Blairsville with 101.5, Tyrone “B” ( the Tyrone junior varsity) 62, Northern Bedford 60.5 and Ligonier Valley 37.5.
Rich Kustenbauder (98), Todd Campbell (119), Dale Reed (126), Bill Dixon (145), Jerry Long (155) and Bruce Wallace all captured individual titles for Tyrone’s varsity team along with Andy Freeman (132) and Roy Cowfer (167) capturing third place and Jeff Loose (hwt.) was fourth.
The Tyrone “B” team had Craig Dutrow finishing second at 119, with an all-Tyrone final with Todd Campbell, Dave Fink was third at 98, Tom Lannen was fourth in another all-Tyrone match in the consifinal at 167, with Roy Cowfer emerging the winner and Tom Woodring captured a third place at 185, as Tyrone placed two of the top three at that weight with Bruce Wallace taking top honors.
Bellwood-Antis finished 10-9 in 1981-82 for head coach Darrell Claar, including compiling a 7-2 mark in the Tri-County League, Leaders for the Blue Devils included Tracey Karlie 24-4, Dan Himes 19-10, Rob Watters 15-5, Drew Huff 16-11 and team leader in wins and present head coach at Glendale High School, Bill Damiano who went 27-7, including third-place at Districts and a 2-2 mark at Regionals.
