The Tyrone girls basketball team traveled to Lock Haven to take on the Central Mountain Lady Cougars on Monday evening. Although Tyrone kept close through the first two quarters, Central Mountain, rated as a Team to Watch by the Harrisburg Patriot State Girls Basketball poll, used a big second-half defensive effort to cage the Lady Eagles 59-36.
Tyrone managed to cling close to Central Mountain, who raised their record to 11-1, trailing just 17-14 after the opening period and 31-25 at the half.
n the second half however, the Lady Cougars stepped it up to limit Tyrone to just 11 points over the final two quarters , while pumping in 15 points in the third quarter and following that up with 13 more in the final stanza when the Tyrone girls could muster just four points.
Reliable senior post players Joanna Turner and Marie DelBaggio led the effort for the Lady Eagles. Turner fronted Tyrone with 13 points and Marie DelBaggio had a strong game, adding 12 points and 12 rebounds to keep the Lady Eagles (7-6) in the game.
“Jo and Marie played pretty well last night,” commented Lady Eagle coach Jim Swaney. “However in two of our last three games, our post players have played well and our guards are letting us down. The guards are not blocking out, not scoring on the perimeter the way we are capable of.”
Lindsey Hollabaugh poured in a game-high 20 points to lead Central Mountain, while Ashley Brandt and Julie Dwyer chipped in with 14 and 12 respectively.
“We were only down by 12 with about a minute left,” said coach Swaney. “The final score was not really indicative of the game. But give Central Mountain credit, they outplayed us and deserved to get the win. We need to step it up a notch if we are going to be able to compete against the better teams on our schedule.”
Central Mountain also won the junior varsity game defaeting the Tyrone Jayvees 33-19.
