Despite any problems the Tyrone Lady Eagles may have with depth, scoring or injuries, one thing has remained constant for them this season: the team defends as well as any in the Mountain League.
That may seem strange considering coach Jim Swaney’s offense is designed more for quick scoring opportunities than grinding down the clock in anticipation of the perfect shot. But after last night’s 55-38 victory on the road at DuBois, the Lady Eagles were surrendering just over 44 points per game and had limited their eighth opponent to less than 50 points.
The victory improved Tyrone’s record to 8-6 overall and continued a roller coaster season for the Lady Eagles that has been marked by key injuries key losses in games that could have gone either way. In its’ last six games, Tyrone is 3-3 and has not won consecutive games since December 27.
It was the Lady Eagles’ fourth consecutive win over the Lady Beavers, who are yet to crack the 40-point barrier against Tyrone.
Senior Joanna Turner continued her strong play in the post with another double-double, pouring in a game-high 25 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Marie DelBaggio added 12 points.
Lauren Haag upped her team-leading three-point total to 19 with a pair of treys and eight points, while Amber DelBaggio dished out six assists, giving her 77 on the season.
The Lady Eagles built an 11-point lead on the Lady Beavers by halftime (29-18) and put the game away in the third quarter with a 17-6 run.
The Lady Eagles travel to Bishop Guilfoyle Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against the Lady Marauders at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium. In December at Tyrone, the Lady Marauders built an 18-point halftime lead and withstood a furious Tyrone comeback attempt in the second half to win 55-43.
