Bellwood-Antis improved to 4-8 with a 42-33 win over Moshannon Valley on Friday night.
In a dual wrestled at Moshannon Valley High School in Amesville, wrestling began at 145.
Dan Himes scored the first points with an early first-period takedown, but the Knights’ Nick Rebar used a pair of reversals and three back points to post an 8-4 win to give Mo Valley a 3-0 lead to open the dual.
Back-to-back pins by Jared Ervine and Dwayne Cherry put the Blue Devils into a 12-3 lead.
Ervine (14-9) and Steve Rebo battled through a scoreless first period before Rebo chose neutral to start the second period. Ervine scored a takedown and worked for the fall in 3:32 at 152. Cherry (12-12) evened his record with a fall over Ryan Welder in 2:21. Cherry jumped on Welder at 160, for a takedown and nearfall in the first period, then notched another takedown to boost his advantage to 7-0 when he applied the pinning combination.
At 171, freshman Fred Disher was too much for Mike Thomas (6-8), using three takedowns and a pair of escapes for an 8-4 lead when he decked the B-A junior in 2:48. Larry Hayward received a forfeit at 189, to move the Black Knights back into the team lead a second time 15-12
B-A came right back to wrap up the match with Shane Evans win at 103, on the mat and four Mo Valley forfeits.
Evans (8-11) gave up a takedown to Jon Cartwright, but reversed the Knight 103-pounder near the end of the first period and wrestled even in the second, trading a takedown by Evans for a Cartwright reversal. The B-A sophomore took control of the final two minute period with a takedown and pair of nearfall points to win 8-4.
Dustin Earnest (4-5) picked up a forfeit at 215 and Chris Carrier (3-14) picked one up at 275 before Evans victory, then Mike McGeary (2-17) and Will Edwards (13-3) picked up forfeits at 112 and 119 respectively.
Josh Ervine finished off the Bellwood-Antis scoring with a 4-1 decision at 125. Ervine used a first-period takedown and third-period reversal while giving up a harmless first period escape.
Aaron Reifer (130), Brandon Gardner (135) and Scott Godin (140) finished up the dual taking forfeits for Moshannon Valley.
“The kids wrestled well,” said B-A coach Ron Wilson. “Of the kids we sent out on the mat, they all gave a good effort. I think we surprised a few people with the win, which was nice. They beat us by three points in a dual meet at Bellwood, which we thing we should have won that match. I think there was kind of a turnaround on them. I think they thought they were going to win this match easily. Our kids stepped up and did what they had to do. We matched up well against them and scored a couple big victories, which really helped us out. The match at 103 was huge with Shane winning for us.”
