Tyrone Hospital is pleased to welcome Michael Drass, M.D., anesthesiologist and pain management specialist to the medical staff.
Dr. Drass is the medical director of Allegheny Pain Management in Altoona. He is now providing Nucleoplasty services at Tyrone Hospital. Nucleoplasty is a non-invasive outpatient treatment to provide relief to people suffering with chronic back pain from contained herniated discs.
Dr. Drass is a native of Cresson. He is board certified in anesthesiology and has a certificate of added qualification in pain management. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He completed graduate studies in physiology at the Pennsylvania State University. His undergraduate studies were completed at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.
Dr. Drass was recognized for outstanding academic achievement while in medical school. His undergraduate honors included a scholastic performance scholarship, the National Dean’s List, the Bishop Hogan Scholarship, and the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society.
His professional training includes a fellowship in pain management at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center that addressed acute, chronic and cancer pain management. He also completed a residency in anesthesiology at the Pennsylvania State University, Hershey Medical Center. He completed an internship in internal medicine at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. His life support certifications include basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support.
Previously, he was an instructor of residents and fellows at the University of Kentucky Medical School in the department of anesthesiology. He has also presented educational programs to physicians on topics related to chronic pain management. In addition, Dr. Drass has led or participated in numerous clinical research studies to evaluate the effectiveness of various pharmaceuticals and other treatments to provide relief from chronic pain.
Dr. Drass’s professional affiliations include the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, the American Neuromodulation Society, the American Pain Society, and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
