The Tyrone Area junior varsity football team took a while to get going in 2008, but the first victory was very sweet. After Clearfield handed the Tyrone varsity their first loss after 35 straight regular season wins, the Eagle junior varsity turned the tables on the Bison JayVees.
The Eagle junior varsity tossed a shutout on defense at Gray-Vets Memorial Field on Monday evening, and the offense jumped out to a 22-0 first-half advantage on their way to a 29-0 triumph over the Clearfield junior varsity for their first win of the season for Tyrone junior varsity coach Darren Elvey.
Zach Burke led the Eagle attack, scoring a pair of touchdowns on runs of seven and three yards, after D.J. Cherry scored the opening TD for Tyrone, on a 12-yard pass from freshman quarterback Stevie Franco.
The defense even got in on the scoring. First, near the end of the second quarter the Eagle “D” blocked a punt and the Bisons were forced to fall on the ball in the Clearfield end zone for a two-point safety. Then, in the fourth quarter, Kyle Ripka intercepted a Clearfield pass and returned the pick 49 yards, for the Orange and Black’s final touchdown.
Sophomore lineman Jared Templeton kicked three extra points for the Golden Eagles.
Tyrone (1-3) will travel to Wingate on Monday, to play the Bald Eagle Area junior varsity in a 6 p.m. start.
