The Tyrone girls softball team opened their season on Thursday looking in playoff form blasting Bishop Guilfoyle 13-3 at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex on Fifth Street.
Tyrone started off with a big four-run first inning and kept going from there. Katie Whitby led the Lady Eagles with three hits and three runs scored and Heather Stanton and Brittany Wilson each belted doubles.
“This was a good way to begin the season,” said Tyrone coach Lois Loncher. “We did have some mental errors that we will definitely have to work on before Monday’s game with Bellwood-Antis. We have four sophomores starting and the girls all did a good job. The sophomores remember Penns Valley from junior high and are pumped about playing them on Wednesday. Hopefully, we won’t overlook Bellwood.”
Hilary McNelis limited Bishop Guilfoyle to three runs and five hits in a complete four-inning game that was shortened by the 10-run mercy rule. McNelis struck out four and walked just two in picking up the victory.
Gibbons had two of the Lady Maraudres’ hits and scored one run. Down 13-1, BG scored twice in the top of the fourth, but it was too little, too late.
