District Six playoff seedings have been computed and the two local high schools are getting set for first round action.
The Bellwood-Antis boys have the highest seed-fourth in Boys Double-A, while the Tyrone boys and girls are both in the fifth seed position. Both Tyrone entries are in Class AAA. The Bellwood-Antis girls are seeded ninth in Class AA.
Kicking off the local action, the Bellwood-Antis girls (14-8) will play Southern Huntingdon, the Number Six seed at 6 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 18, at Huntingdon High School. The Lady Blue Devils dropped both games to Southern Huntingdon during Juniata Valley League play. The Lady Rockets triumphed 46-38 on Jan. 6, at Southern, then played a better game, but lost 35-31 at Bellwood, on Feb. 4. This is the first game at Huntingdon, and will be followed by Belleville Mennonite-Juniata Valley boys at 7:30. The winner of the Blue Devils-Southern Huntingdon game will face top seed Penns Valley (21-1) in the quarterfinals of the 12-team AA field on Friday Feb. 21, at a place and time to be determined.
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, The Tyrone Lady Eagles (13-9) will face Bellefonte at Bald Eagle Area High School at 6 p.m. Bellefonte edged the Lady Eagles 58-57 in the first game in Mountain League play on Jan 7. Tyrone then dominated the Lady Raiders last Friday 64-50, at home in the second cycle contest. The Lewistown-Bellefonte boys contest will follow. The winner of the Tyrone-Bellefonte girls game will play top seed Lewistown in the semifinals of the seven-team AAA bracket.
Also on Wednesday, Feb. 19, the Bellwood-Antis boys (20-3) will play fifth seed Richland at Central Cambria High School in Ebensburg. Game time will be 7:30 and will follow the Juniata Valley-Homer Center girls game. There are 11 teams in the boys AA bracket. The winner of the Blue Devils-Richland game will meet the winner of the top seed Ligonier Valley-Philipsburg-Osceola/Cambria Heights game.
The Tyrone boys (10-10) will begin their playoff hunt on Thursday Feb. 20, against Central, at Hollidaysburg Junior High School. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the Bishop Guilfoyle girls-Marion Center/Central winner which will start at 6 p.m. In their only encounter of the season, Tyrone defeated the Scarlet Dragons 60-51 on Jan. 4. The winner of the Tyrone-Central game will meet the winner of the top seed Penn Cambria- Johnstown/Huntingdon game. There are nine teams in the AAA playoff bracket.
