Tyrone senior Misty Snyder was awarded one of 15 scholarships presented to outstanding Health Occupations Students of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to students to pursue post-secondary/collegiate education to become a health care professional.
“I was surprised to win this award,” said Snyder. “It is an honor to be the first from our area to receive this award. It was something I didn’t expect to win with over 50 applicants for the scholarship.”
Snyder is an honor student at Tyrone High School and has been a member of the HOSA Club at Tyrone for three years, and is enrolled in the TAHS Health Occupations Program that is taught by Kim Germino.
The scholarships that are awarded by the Pennsylvania HOSA Foundation are given to prepare future health care professionals.
There is a great need for young scholars to study any of the many health care professions. To receive the scholarship, students must take part in one of the following programs: labratory technology; nursing; nursing assisting; radiology technology; perfusionist; pharmacist; occupational therapy or medicine.
Snyder has dreamed of being in the medical field for years.
“I have wanted to be in nursing since second grade,” said Snyder. “My mom is a CNA (certified nursing assistant). I have always wanted to be able to help people.”
The Pennsylvania HOSA Foundation was established to raise money to support scholarships for talented students that wish to go to college to pursue a health profession.
“Misty is an excellent student in this program,” said Germino. “She is very hard working, professional and works well with the patients and staff. She currently is working at HealthSouth rehabilitation. She helps patients in the physical therapy department. She also served as an nurses aide at Epworth Manor for nine weeks. She helped make the beds and get patients ready for their day. It is an honor to have Misty represent our program like this.”
Snyder, plans to attend Penn State University following graduation to major in pediatric nursing.
