Inside jokes, off the record conversations and letters to the editor from a candidate that won’t run in the pages of our paper due to our policies, make for wasted space in this column and to you our readers. So I will spend just a paragraph on it.
Our “Cattle Call” candidate for Tyrone Council and I are feuding behind the scenes over my comments last week. During a brief phone conversation I hung up on him because I was busy at the time and was not going to argue. Since the phone call, he has written a letter to the paper and to our publisher. Surely, this gentlemen understands sarcasm? Which is what my comments contained when I joked about offering him his own column. And he missed this important comment, that I said not once, but twice during our brief tirade on the phone, “After you lose we can talk!”
What kind of a message are we showing our young people and those afflicted with a heroin problem in Tyrone when we drop the possession of heroin charges against a student who was carrying the drug on his person while at school?
If I were a part of the Tyrone School District, I would be upset.
Another question for everyone?
How can we combat this tremendous problem without places like Pyramid and the forthcoming methadone clinic in Antis Township? Again, I understand residents being upset, but these type of positive sources and venues to solve the problem are needed here.
A teaching assistant back home was suspended without pay for wearing a one-inch cross pendent to work. When she was warned to take it off, she refused because of her faith and beliefs. I attended a very positive prayer rally with hundreds of others in support of her stance last night. I understand the church and state issues, but I can’t help but think what is coming next in this country.
Are we going to do away with every religious symbol before its all over? What’s next to go? The symbol of the fish, the dove, candles, the daisy, a ring of thorns? I guess we will have to do away with our wedding bands based on what it stands for when we are united in marriage in God’s eyes.
Imagine sitting in church this Sunday morning while wearing a small pendant of the American flag in honor of our victorious fighting men and women of our military and having the church usher walk up to you and tap you on the shoulder and whisper “you’re going to have to remove the flag from your coat jacket.”
Is this also a church and state issue? The American flag? I believe that you have just as much freedom to wear a small flag in church as you do a cross in school. Wasn’t the war in Iraq a part of the freedom of speech, freedom of religion issues that we talk and brag about in this country? I support Mrs. Brenda Nichol 150 percent in her stance in showing her faith in God.
The Daily Herald is holding another candidates night for the residents of Antis Township on May 15th at the Bellwood Antis high school auditorium at 7 p.m. The event, hosted by Daily Herald Editor John Harlow, is another positive night for residents to see and hear the views and ideas of the people running for the supervisor positions.
Tomorrow features one of the largest editions of this newspaper in a long time. I want to thank all of you and the wonderful business people of northern Blair County for your help in making us a better newspaper.
Have a great weekend! Glad to see that DelGrosso Park is open, meaning that it’s finally spring and summer is the way.
