On Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at seven o’clock, in the Tyrone Area High School Auditorium, the Anna Mary Lake Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 27 new members.
National Honor Society is founded on the principles of academic excellence, moral character, and community service. In order to be considered for membership, students must first complete two consecutive marking periods with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. A list of potential candidates is then sent to all teachers who are asked to report if they feel that a candidate should not be included for any reason. After this process is completed, the candidates are inducted during a ceremony.
The National Honor Society has high standards for its members. To remain a member, students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. If a student’s GPA drops below 3.5 for two consecutive marking periods, his or her membership will be terminated. Another factor that determines NHS standing is community service. Members must complete a minimum of 30 community service hours per academic year. Also, membership can also be ended if students fail to uphold a high level of moral character.
Mr. Don Friday, junior high National Honor Society advisor, said that students should aspire to join Honor Society because “competing for the highest level of academic achievement” should be a student’s personal goal.
He also said, “Inclusion in this organization definitely does not go unnoticed by college admissions officers.”
Junior Sarah Maclaughlin, who was inducted at the ceremony, echoed the thoughts of Mr. Friday. When asked if she would recommend that other students join National Honor Society, she said, “Yes. I think that other students should join because it is a good opportunity and it will look good on resumés.”
