Toes will be tappin’ and heads will be bobbin’ at Tyrone High School come July 26.
That’s because legendary rockers The Marcels are making their encore appearance in Northern Blair County.
Last year, the band rocked the auditorium in February, despite threatening weather conditions. This year, Mother Nature shouldn’t have the opportunity to mess with anyone’s plans for attending.
“We’re so excited The Marcels are coming back,” said Chuck Banas, public relations director with the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library. “Tickets are so in demand that we’ve decided to start selling them earlier than expected.”
Tickets for the concert, titled “Salute to the Jukebox Legends,” were scheduled to go on sale July 7, but Banas said because of the high demand for the vouchers, printing is just going to have to come a little early.
Tickets will soon be available at the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library, Med-Center Pharmacy, Joybeans, Levine’s Shoefly, Kopp Drug, Healthy Alternatives, Bressler’s Food Market and Sports, the Altoona Library and at Eagle Video at Giant Eagle in Altoona. Tickets can also be purchased from any member of the Library Board of Directors. Cost is $30 per person and all proceeds will benefit the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library’s New Building Fund.
The concert is scheduled to begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
Headlining the show will be, of course, The Marcels.
“They’re a great band that keeps everybody into the show,” said Banas. “After what we saw them do last year, there’s no reason to believe the show won’t be as great this year. Everybody’s excited and the heavy demand for tickets prove that.”
The Marcels are the group that really started the phrase: “Who put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp.” Their first hit was in 1961 when they released “Blue Moon.” This song sold more than million copies.
“Blue Moon” was then followed by several albums and many hit singles which resulted in sales up into the millions for The Marcels.
They recorded the song “The Greatest Love,” which was used in the motion picture “The Interns.” They also appeared with Chubby Checker in the film “Twist Around the Clock.”
The Marcels feature the vocal talents of Julius Hopson, Richie Merritt, Richard Harris and Ted “Reno” Smith.
The Marcels also pay tribute to yesteryear’s vocals by performing hits from the glory years of The Temptations, The Four Tops, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Smokey Robinson and the incomparable Jackie Wilson.
Joining The Marcels will be Vanessa Campagna, who some may remember as the runner-up in this past season’s NBC production of Star Search; Mayra and I’Jasnem. More information will be released on these artists in upcoming editions of The Daily Herald.
According to Banas, fundraising has gone rather well for the project, which, once completed, will bring a brand new, state-of-the-art library to Northern Blair County. The new location is at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and West Tenth Street in Tyrone.
