Martin Oil won the batter of oil sponsors on Saturday with a 5-1 decision over Barkman Oil at Bellwood’s Stadium Drive field.
This ballgame was a 5 p.m. start in what was supposed to be the second game of a double header for Martin Oil. The first game was to be against Locker Room at Hollidaysburg, but a wet field postponed that one.
Zach Stere gave Martin Oil a quick lead by belting a two-out first-inning home run over the centerfield fence.
Chris Alley drove in what proved to be the winning runs in the second, singling in Nate Carlson and Cory Daly with two outs, for a 3-0 lead. Carlson reached on a walk to lead off the frame and Daly singled off the third base bag. Each stole a base to get into scoring position.
In the fourth, Damion Miller opened the inning by beating out an infield hit and stole second base. After Daly walked, Alley bunted both runners up a base. With Dan Houser batting, Miller came home from third on a wild pitch with Daly moving to third. Houser walked and Martin Oil attempted a double steal. Houser was thrown out at second, but Daly scored on the play to give Martin Oil a 5-1 lead.
Daly pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win for Martin Oil, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking two. Houser tossed the final three innings in relief allowing Barkman’s one run on three hits, striking out two and walking two.
“The key for us this summer is going to be contributions on the mound from a lot of different players,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “I was hoping to get a couple innings out of Cory Daly today and he threw four real beautiful innings and then Danny Houser came in and finished off with three nice innings. I just couldn’t ask for more from those two. Fortunately our defense was great again tonight. When you get the pitching and defense, it sort of compensates for the hitting. We have good hitters, the bats will come.”
On Sunday, Martin Oil played a doubleheader against Dick’s Pharmacy at Bellwood winning the first game 12-3 and getting a clutch two-out seventh-inning single by Dan Graham to take the nightcap 5-4.
Martin Oil fell behind 4-1 in the second game before cutting into Dick’s lead with two tallies in the third. Shawn Weiand and Nate Carlson ripped back-to-back doubles to score the first run of the inning and Damion Miller singled in Carlson with one out.
Weiand scored Andy Brisbin with a sac fly in the fourth to tie the game. Brisbin had singled with one out, moved to second on a single by Zach Stere and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Carlson picked up the victory in game two by tossing four hitless innings of relief, striking out six and walking one. Dan Graham pitched the first three innings, giving up four runs, although none were earned, on three hits, with two Ks and no walks.
Josh Mulhollem had two hits and an RBI to lead Dick’s. Todd Monahan took the loss in relief, going three innings and yielding one run on four hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.
In the first game of the day, Jeremy Horton opened the game by taking Martin Oil starter Derrick Miller yard for a quick 1-0 lead. Horton also rapped a pair of doubles to lead Dick’s on offense.
Dick’s scored twice in the first and added two more in the second, but then was blanked by Miller, Chris Alley and Zach Stere for the remainder of the contest.
Alley pitched the middle three innings to pick up the win, scattering three hits with one strikeout and one walk. Stere pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to complete the 12-3 win.
Dan Houser was the hitting leader for Martin Oil with a double and two singles and four runs scored. Stere added a single and double and three RBIs and was twice hit by a pitch to reach base four times, and Cory Daly had two hits and one RBI.
