The Tyrone Girls tennis team won their first match in the new Mountain Athletic Girls Tennis league on Thursday. The Lady Eagles balanced their record at 1-1 with a 5-2 defeat of Huntingdon.
The Lady Eagles, coached by Charles Fitzgerald, were surprised by the appearance of a new tennis player at Huntingdon, a foreigh exchange student, playing at number one singles with international tennis experience. This resulted in a total shifting of Huntingdon’s lineup with their former number one player moving down to number two, number two moving down to number three and so on.
In spite of this major change, or perhaps because of it, the Lady Eagles showed their true form in winning an excellent match to even their record after the opening week of MAC play.
Missy Stager won for the Tyrone girls at number two singles, along with Beth Nelson (number four) and Becky Swann (number five) and the Lady Eagles sewed up the match by taking both doubles as well, with Hilary McNelis and Stager putting away the number one doubles match 8-0 and Emily Fitzgerald and Nelson putting in to the Lady Bearcats number two pair by the same 8-0 score.
“I am so pleased with this team effort,”said coach Fitzgerald. “I can’t say enough about how well all our girls played. This tennis team will be one of Tyrone’s finest for years to come,” said the very happy coach.
The two schools split two exhibition matches with Cynda Ormsby and Confer edging their opponents 8-6, while Kaylie Fink dropped a singles match.
