The Tyrone girls volleyball team traveled to Wingate on Tuesday for a match against once-beaten Bald Eagle Area.
BEA won three straight games to take the match, although the Tyrone girls were in all three contests, losing 25-29, 25-20 and 25-23. The BEA ladies have lost just once-to Huntingdon, the Golden Eagles next opponent.
Katie Whitby had seven service points and 17 assists for the Lady Eagles. Stephanie Catich had three kills and seven blocks and Sara Mease added 10 digs.
“We played a strong match against a very good Bald Eagle team,” said Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “They have only lost one league game and that was to Huntingdon, so it was a true test of where we are at. The girls have really come together over the last two weeks. I have to keep reminding myself that four of the eight girls who are seeing the majority of the varsity playing time are sophomores. One of them, Marissa Hoover, is seeing some varsity time and she had never played the game prior to this summer’s clinics. We don’t quite have the experience yet to come out with wins against some of these teams, but we aren’t going to be an easy win for anybody as long as we continue to improve.”
The Tyrone junior varsity won their match with the Bald Eagle Area Jayvees two games to one.
Tyrone (4-7) travels to Huntingdon for a match on Thursday at 6 p.m.
