The Tyrone junior high girls basketball team hosted Lewistown on Tuesday, playing their second game in as many days with another game yet to play against Bellefonte on Thursday.
The Lady Eagles dropped a 40-32 decision to Lewistown to drop to 4-8.
Stefani Bryan scored a team-high 15 points and had seven rebounds to lead the Lady Eagles, who will travel to Bellefonte for the Thursday game which begins at 6 p.m.
Elizabeth Tepsic had six points and nine rebounds and Kayla Corle added seven points for the Lady Eagles, who were down 26-13 at the half.
“We dug a hole for ourselves in the first half,” said Tyrone coach Kerry Naylor. “We played zone defense, because we knew they had a couple shooters and the we didn’t really have to worry about the rest. In the first quarter, we had trouble locating the shooters. Lewistown didn’t overwhelm us, except for about a two-minute period when they scored a lot of points. Other than that, it was a pretty close game. We held them to just 12 second-half points and really played hard in the fourth quarter to close the score to 34-32, but then Lewistown went into a spread offense, which they run very well.
“Stefani played a great game for us again. When she plays like that, we can do a lot things.”
The seventh and eighth grade team defeated Lewistown 27-22 to improve to 8-3.
Lindsay Christine scored seven points and had 15 rebounds and Sarah Halter led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
The seventh and eighth graders were down to Lewistown, but made a third period comeback with two key buckets from Ashley Shultz to close to within two points. Then Halter took over, personally outscoring Lewistown 8-5 in the final quarter to pace the Lady Eagles to the win.
“We got behind again in the seventh and eighth grade game as well,” explained Naylor. “Those two baskets by Ashley Shultz were huge to get us back to within two. Then Sarah just took over the game, outscoring their entire team herself.”
