The Bellwood-Antis girls junior high basketball team hit a speed bump in their development this week. The Blue Devils lost just about everybody two years ago after winning two straight Juniata Valley Junior High League titles in a row. The journey back began as a slow laborious process last season when the girls were able to win just two games and spent a lot of time learning fundamentals.
The 2003 season (8-5) has been very hopeful. The future potential seems to be there. Already, the girls have eight wins and several promising young girls are stepping to the line.
However, a 44-21 loss to Southern Huntingdon, on Tuesday, and a 48-17 loss to Williamsburg, on Thursday, has temporarily dumped cold water on the upswing.
Liz Erickson, a seventh grader, scored 10 points against the Lady Rockets and six points against Williamsburg to lead the B-A girls in both games. Lauren Lender, an eighth grader scored five points in each game.
“We played well in the first half against Williamsburg,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Steve Conlon. “In the second half however, Williamsburg had the ability to go to another level, which we weren’t able to counter.”
The Lady Blue Pirates, one of the best junior high programs in the area, improved to 13-1,
