Former Tyrone Police Chief John T. Cooper was located at his home yesterday morning after authorities called out all reinforcements to locate him after a Saturday evening accident in Snyder Township.
According to state police at Hollidaysburg, Cooper was traveling south on Gypsy Camp Road, approximately 1.5 miles north of Adams Avenue, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when his 1998 Mercury Sable sedan crashed into the rear of a vehicle operated by Patricia Wertz of Tyrone.
Police said the impact pushed Wertz’s vehicle into a ditch and Cooper’s Mercury continued traveling about 70 feet until it too crashed into a ditch.
Police said both operators got out of their vehicles and they knew each other, but while waiting for police response, Cooper wandered away from the crash site.
Police felt that Cooper may have had injuries or was in diabetic shock and was confused, causing him to wander into the woods.
Police called on the state police helicopter in an attempt to locate the missing man. All search efforts were negative early Sunday morning.
According to police, Cooper was located later in the morning at his home after phoning authorities concerning the incident.
Police said the incident is still under investigation.
Police were assisted at the scene by Tyrone volunteer fire fighters, AMED and the Bald Eagle Fire Co.
Police did not note if Wertz suffered any injuries in the mishap.
