The Tyrone Area YMCA third and fourth grade youth basketball league games are scheduled to begin tomorrow.
Currently, the league consists of six teams, which are made up of approximately 60 community kids that range from Bellwood-Antis to Port Matilda.
The teams include: Michaels Photography, coached by Larry Nevling; Frito Lay, coached by Kevin Bates; Mark by Avon, coached by Shelly Hettinger; Tyrone Elks, coached by Jeff Leamer; Joyner Sports Medicine Institute, coached by Joe DelGrosso and DeGols, coached by George Gripp.
Referees include Dave Rizzo and Jim Cushion, with two more individuals on stand-by. The scorekeeper for the games is Andy Ashcroft, who is volunteering his time to complete service hours for church.
The pre-season games were held November 29, and according to YMCA program director David Shildt, they all went very well.
The first regular season games scheduled for December 6 were canceled due to the snow. The basketball games are scheduled to begin tomorrow, December 13. Players are reminded to follow last week’s schedule. Anyone with questions regarding the schedule or game times should call Shildt at the YMCA at 684-2740.
Game starting times are 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., based upon the ending time of the previous game.
Shildt also said that due to a YMCA board recommendation, a $1 admission for adults 18 and over will be charged for each basketball game.
Other reminders about the league include all teams make the playoffs, and it will be based on seeds with single elimination. The top two teams will get a first round bye, and the championship game is tentatively scheduled for January 31, 2004.
Shildt said he would like to thank all the sponsors for their support of the third and fourth grade basketball league in making it such a successful start to the season.
The YMCA offers numerous winter programs for all ages, including dance classes, karate instruction, gymnastics classes and team, youth strength training, swimming lessons, yoga, water aerobics, active older adult exercise program, and women on weights.
