Although reorganization and policy concerns topped the agenda of last week’s meeting of the Bellwood-Antis School Board of Directors, routine business was also conducted.
Perhaps the most notable topics concerned district support to the Bellwood-Antis Park and Recreation Authority.
Board members chose to table a motion which would increase the annual support to the Park and Recreation Authority from $1,000 to $5,000.
Board member Scott Boyer requested tabling the motion to allow fellow member Dave Worthing to attend the BAPRA meeting on Dec. 16 to learn a little more why an increase is needed. He said the $1,000 was previously allotted for repairs to the girls’ softball field.
Worthing volunteered to represent the board on the authority. He was unanimously voted to the position by the board.
The authority also unanimously voted to approve paying for TB tests for volunteers in the district at a cost of $10 each. Although an exact number of volunteers in the district could not be pinpointed, Superintendent Brian Toth said the majority are involved with athletics. The testing, which has been required by the state since 1986, will be administered through Blair Medical.
In other business, the board:
•approved the Disaster Shelter and Reception Center Agreement with the Blair County Chapter of the American Red Cross. This agreement is valid for three years;
•approved the Bellwood-Antis School District’s participation in the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 ESL Consortium for the 2004-05 school year at a cost not to exceed $5,000;
•approved the non-disclosure agreement with Management Science Associates. This agreement allows the district to confidentially share data with MSA and receive an analysis of that data that relates to No Child Left Behind requirements. There is no cost to the district;
•approved the actions of the hearing officer at the student discipline hearing held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 for the 12th grade male student and the adjudication in the matter of such disciplinary action be and is hereby ratified in all respects as the action of the Board of School Directors of the Bellwood-Antis School District;
•approved the following substitute teachers for the 2003-04 school year: Melissa Dunn, certification in elementary/special education; Melissa Miller, certification in elementary ed (k-6); and Amanda Brown, certification in elementary ed (K-6);
•approved the following substitutes: Pam O’Shea, teacher aide/greeter/office worker; Stephanie Cooley, teacher aide/greeter/office worker; Kathleen Trude, teacher aide/greeter/office worker; Bill Edmiston, greeter; and Theresa Wyland, greeter;
•accepted the resignation of Susan McCloskey-Nycum as the assistant girls’ track coach effective immediately;
•approved Dennis Pegg to provide homebound instruction to a second grade student for approximately six weeks beginning Nov. 17 at the rate of $24.18 per hour;
•approved an additional two hours per day for an additional serving line for breakfast at Myers Elementary and time to process payment envelopes;
•learned the next meeting of the Bellwood-Antis Foundation will be on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 a.m.;
•learned Richard Tate, Julie Roseborough, Susan Estep, Judy Dorezas and Mike Sakash attended the Student Assistance Program Networking Day at the Altoona Hospital on Oct. 29; and
•learned Jerry Farkus and Brad Weirich attended the “HELPKIT To Your Rescue” training at the IU8 executive office in Altoona on Oct. 23.
