Mrs. Verna E. Troxell, 95, formerly of 431 E. Grant Ave., Altoona, went to be with the Lord Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2004, at Epworth Manor, Tyrone, after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 19, 1908, in Van Ormer, Cambria County, a daughter of the late Jesse and Jane Matilda (Stiffler) Coy. She married Robert C. Troxell on June 10, 1930 in Ebensburg. He died Sept. 19, 1969.
Mrs. Troxell was a member of Garden Heights United Methodist Church, where she served as church organist for more than 40 years and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
She retired as an elementary school teacher in 1974, having taught at Washington-Jefferson Elementary School and before that at East End Elementary School.
Mrs. Troxell was a 1926 graduate of Reade Township High School, Mountaindale and a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College.
She enjoyed travel and needlework.
Mrs. Troxell was a member of the National Education Association and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
Surviving are two sons: Robert J. Englewood, CO and Merrill C. of Altoona; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family of nine children having been preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today Feb. 26, 2004 at Gilden Barton Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday by Pastor Barbara Woodrig. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Garden Heights United Methodist Church of Epworth Manor.
