PA Cleanways of Blair and Huntingdon County is organizing a cleanup of the Lower Trail of the Juniata Watershed on Saturday April 17th, 2004. This site, which is part of the Pittsburgh to Harrisburgh Mainline Greenway project, and is ad adjacent to the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River, has an estimated 5-7 tons of trash, including scrap metal, construction waste, household trash and over 200 tires, some of which is spilling into the river. All this trash will be removed to help continue the 5-mile extension of the rails to trails project from Williamsburg to Canoe Creek in Blair Count. The trail originated in Huntingdon County and is used by many outdoor enthusiasts, as well as local wildlife.
Once cleaned, native trees and shrubs will be planted to secure stream banks and provide adequate shelter from wildlife. A volunteer monitor through Rails to Trails of Central PC and an already established trail maintenance program will maintain the site.

Funding this project was provided through the PA Department of Community Conservation Partnerships Program, with a 50% match from PA CleanWays and other project partners.
PA CleanWays is a statewide nonprofit environmental organization with recognized expertise in cleaning up illegal dumps and empowering people to take action againsty illegal dumping and littering. Since its inception in 1990, the organization has coordinated more than 1,600 illigal dumpsite cleanups, litter clearups, and hard to recycle events.
