On April 28, Penn State’s Center for Watershed Stewardship is hosting an open house and community watershed meeting for the general public and residents of the Spruce Creek Watershed.
The meeting will be held at the Warriors Mark United Methodist Church from 7-9 p.m., with refreshments served starting at 6:30 p.m.
The event will begin with a presentation by the Spruce Creek Watershed Keystone Team summarizing the key elements of their assessment of the Spruce Creek Watershed.
This presentation will be followed by an open information session, which will include displays, posters and further information about the Keystone Team’s Spruce Creek Watershed assessment project and its recommendations for future conservation and protection activities.
Natural resource professionals, local environmental organizations and Keystone Team members will be present during this session to answer questions and speak in more depth about issues facing the Spruce Creek Community and the watershed.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet the next group of CWS students taking over the Spruce Creek project in 2004-05.
The Spruce Creek Watershed encompasses sections of six townships in Centre and Huntingdon counties and includes the drainage areas of Beaver Branch, Fowler Run, Halfmoon Creek, Spruce Creek and Warriors Mark Run.
The Spruce Creek Watershed is important at local, state and national scales.
Not only does Spruce Creek host a renowned trout fishery, but it is also part of the larger Juniata and Susquehanna River Basin, which eventually drains into the Chesapeake Bay – an internationally important ecosystem.
The overall quality of the creek, however, is dependent on the health of the surrounding watershed.
